Barbara MacKay is an experienced Community Economic Development consultant. For several years she worked on contract with Women and Rural Economic Development (WRED) as a Facilitator with their Enterprise Development Initiative.

"In this program to assist entrepreneurs in planning and starting their own businesses, my primary goal was to facilitate learning about business — from conducting market research to planning operations, developing distribution channels and organizing record keeping. Working with a regional training team and an adaptable curriculum that focused on business plan development, financial management, and business operations, I facilitated group process and lessons, and also provided individual consultation to participants.

I was the project manager for JobSite, a program funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), to assist unemployed and underemployed people to gain work experience. The program provided training to unemployed in the areas of pre-employment skills, resume writing, interviewing skills, and matched these people with area employers for an on-site work experience of two to six weeks.

As project manager, I liaised with HRSDC, with program trainers and with employers. I had overall responsibility for the program including marketing; scheduling and supervision of training; and reporting. Specific tasks included work planning for the team; soliciting employers to participate in the program; preparation of employer information package; the development of a promotional strategy; preparation of promotional materials (including a brochure, information flyer, media releases); follow-up meetings with employers; team meetings with trainers; recruitment and information sessions for participants; the timely delivery of the promotional strategy; and monthly written reports to HRSDC."
